It is true that only Naguib Mahfouz’s body had parted us, for his spirit would continue to float through the pages of his books, and his immortal works would never cease to amaze the coming generations.
The following quotes are from his book “echoes of an autobiography” in which he describes only short situations he has had, each has a title, with incredible technique and lessons that we may need to read many long books to learn:
- Beat, O heart of mine, and love everything beautiful, and weep with copious tears; but do not regret.
- Praise be to God, whose existence has saved us from frivolous play in the world and from perdition in the afterlife.
- “what is the sign of unbelief?” “discontent.”
- “How will the ordeal we are suffering end?” “if we come out safe, that’s a mercy; and if we come out doomed, that is justice.”
- The nearest man comes to his Lord is when he is exercising his freedom correctly.
- Life appears to be a chain of struggles, tears, and fears, and yet it has a magic that enchants and intoxicates.
- He who has lost his faith has lost life and death.
- How beautiful are the stories of love-may God forgive the time, that gives them life and causes their death.
- Do not curse the world, for it hardly has a hand in what occurs in it.
- Do what you wish provided you do not forget your basic function, which is to leave something behind you.
- Two jewels are charged with looking after the golden door, saying to the one who knocks “come forward, for there is no escape”. They are love and death.
- The breeze of love blows for an hour and makes amends for the ill winds of the whole of a lifetime.
- “I am love. Were it not for me the water would dry up, the air would become putrid, and death would strut about in every corner”.
- With the inhalation of the universe and its exhalation, all joys and pains are in raptures.
- “Why does optimism prevail with us?” “Because we still admire beautiful words even though we do not practice them”.
- Nothing alarmed me as did the sight of life dancing with death to that rhythm we hear only once in a whole lifetime.
- In the desert is an oasis that is the hope of him who has lost his way.
- Singing is the dialogue of hearts in love.
- The present is a light that flickers between two darknesses.
- If you want to discover the meaning of life, move about without delay, for the meaning is concealed in movement.
- If you are lured by an inclination towards melancholy, then treat it with love and a song.
- As you love, so will you be.
- The friend to whom we seldom extend a welcome is death.
- Some people are preoccupied with life and others are preoccupied with death. As for me, my position is firmly fixed in the middle way.
- It has been decreed that man shall walk staggering between pleasure and pain.
- If you have sincerely loved the world, the afterlife will love you warmly.
- A single beat from the heart of a lover is capable of driving out a hundred sorrows.
- I found myself in a sea in which the waves of joy and sorrow were clashing against each other.
- Love is the key to the secrets of existence.
- I saw death in the guise of a man far advanced in years. It said reprovingly “if I abstained from my work for a year, I would force you to affirm my usefulness”.
- They are two. By its strength the first created the other, and by its weakness the other created the first.
- In the universe floats the will, and in the will floats the universe.
- Perfection is a dream that lives in the imagination. If it were to be realized in existence, life for any living creature would not be pleasant.
- It pursues me from the cradle to the grave: love.
- Beware, for I have found no trade more profitable than the selling of dreams.
- Love of the world is one of the signs of gratitude, and evidence of a craving for everything beautiful. And one of the distinguishing marks of patience.
- The first love is but a training that benefits the lucky ones who attain the love of God.
